10 Self Care Ideas for Singers

It goes without saying that this pandemic has brought some enormous challenges for performing artists everywhere. Music is healing. Singing is our medicine. It's how we express ourselves when words are not enough. We need music now more than ever to be able to cope with the stresses of this world. I understand that not being able to engage in musical activities in the way that we are used to doing can be very stressful and even depressing at times. Nevertheless, here are a few tips to help keep your stress levels down and your voice in shape.

  1. Grab a cozy blanket and sip your favorite tea - Add a good book and enjoy! Drinking tea (preferably decaffeinated) with honey and lemon can be very soothing to the vocal cords.

  2. Yoga - Focus. Balance. Body Awareness. Stress Relief. What more can you ask for? Yoga has great benefits for singers and your overall health and wellness.

  3. Give yourself a facial steam treatment or take a shower (add essential oils) - Steam is great for your vocal cords. It helps to keep them hydrated and reduces swelling and irritation.

  4. Watch a live performance or concert - There's nothing better than watching your favorite performer do what they do best.

  5. Listen to a classic album - Break out the classics and have a listening party for one. If you have a record player, even better!

  6. Meditate - There are many apps that you can use for guided meditation or you can just take some time to yourself listening to some calm, relaxing music and just breathe.

  7. Journaling - Write down your goals, dreams, affirmations, or just take some time to vent. Transfer the thoughts that are swirling around in your mind onto paper.

  8. Get a massage - Go ahead and treat yourself! Getting a massage can help get rid of unnecessary tension in your body.

  9. Exercise - Exercise is the best mood changer. It also helps you to build strength and stamina, both of which are very beneficial to singers

  10. Find a fun warm-up video - Keep those vocal folds in shape by doing some fun warm-ups. YouTube has plenty of great videos.

Self-care is not selfish! Set a goal each day to schedule a time to engage in an activity that brings you joy and makes you feel centered. Perhaps it's one of the activities above or just singing in the shower or around the house. Whatever it is, make it a priority in your day. Pretty soon, we WILL be able to safely get back on stage and connect with our audience, in person. But until then, be sure to take care of yourself. You deserve it!
