FAQ

Home: FAQ

What can I expect in a typical voice lesson?

Each lesson will be tailored to your unique voice and performance goals.  I will take you through various breathing and vocal exercises that will help you learn how to properly warm-up your voice, develop your tone and enhance your stage presence. A typical lesson usually includes physical stretches, vocal exercises, ear training, song study and a warm-down. We will also discuss your practice goals for the week.

What genre of music do you specialize in?

I specialize in Pop, R&B, Gospel, Classical, Jazz, Musical Theater and everything in between. The techniques that you will learn during your sessions can be applied across genres. At the end of the day, it's all about healthy singing!

What equipment do I need for virtual lessons?

All you will need is a device (laptop, tablet, or phone w/ tripod) with a camera and a good internet connection. You will also need to make sure you are in a space where you can move around freely.

Do you offer voice lessons to children?

Yes. I offer lessons to children ages 8 and up. However, if you have a little one who is younger than 8, is passionate about singing, and wants to take lessons, I recommend scheduling a consultation.

How much prior experience do I need?

All skills levels are welcome! Whether you are a beginner or advanced, I will start where you are and take you to the next level.

How many lessons do I need?

It really depends on your goals and experience level. For beginners, I recommend at least 6-8 weekly lessons to start.

Do I need to know how to read music?

No, however in your lessons I will include sight-reading and ear training because it will only enhance your singing abilities.

What should I do if I need to cancel?

If you need to cancel, please give at least 24 hours notice. You can cancel your session through the booking system or contact me at deannajmusic@gmail.com.

Student Testimonials

DeAnna is the most caring and constructive instructor I have ever come across. Her knowledge of how the voice, body and breath work together is super helpful with building range, tone and overall presence of the voice. I would recommend Deanna to anyone looking to build confidence in their voice and ultimately themselves as a performer.

All About Me

Educator. Performer. Mentor.

I have extensive experience in vocal performance and teaching. I am a native of Detroit and a graduate of the Detroit High School of Arts.  After graduation, I went on to earn a B.M. in Music Education from Kentucky State University and an M.M. in Music Education from Bowling Green State University.  For over a decade,  I have taught general music and chorus at the elementary, middle, high school, and college levels.  I have been privileged to perform with the Michigan Opera Theatre as a chorister in several productions as well as in many venues around the Detroit area.

I love what I do and it makes me so happy to be able to share my passion with others. Since starting as a professional Voice Instructor in 2007, I’ve been privileged to see so many students discover their natural skills and abilities and reach results they never dreamed were possible. If that sounds like something you’d like to explore, contact me!
